Princess Bride Costume

As a huge fan of The Princess Bride, I couldn’t resist the idea of doing a family costume based on this iconic movie. Since it’s just me and my twin boys, we decided to go with three of the main characters—Buttercup, Westley, and Inigo Montoya!

In this post, I’ll walk you through how I put together these looks, from the costumes I bought to the DIY pieces I created for Inigo. His outfit ended up being a fun mix of items I picked out, and it turned out perfectly. Whether you’re dressing up for Halloween, a movie-themed party, or just want to have some fun with the family, this guide will help you recreate these classic Princess Bride characters with ease.

How to Create Buttercup’s Costume

When it came to creating my Buttercup costume, I usually love to dive into a good DIY project—like the time I made my own Up House costume for one of my first Halloweens with my boys. However, with life being so busy lately, I decided to keep things simple and buy the dress and wig online for my Princess Bride costume.

It’s a popular costume, so I was able to find one with amazing quality—the dress was beautifully detailed, and the wig looked incredibly real! Even though I opted for store-bought pieces instead of DIY, it turned out perfectly and saved me so much time. Sometimes, buying is the way to go!

How to Create Westley’s Costume

Creating Westley’s costume for my Princess Bride costume was a fun experience! I usually love a good DIY project—like the time I made a DIY Oogie Boogie costume for our Nightmare Before Christmas theme, which is still one of my favorite costumes I’ve created. However, this time I decided to buy Westley’s outfit because it looked so realistic and was reasonably priced.

I found it on Amazon and paired it with a sword I picked up from a Halloween store. While you can find this exact costume in adult sizes, I bought it for one of my boys, and they were thrilled to be Westley! They played with their sword all Halloween night, fully embracing their role.

How to Create Inigo Montoya’s Costume

Creating Inigo’s costume for our Princess Bride costume was a fun challenge! After some research, I realized there weren’t any pre-made Inigo costumes that looked realistic enough, so I decided to make it myself by piecing together different items from various places.

I found a Renaissance-style white shirt on Amazon and paired it with an adult XS brown Renaissance vest, which I wanted to be long, so it worked perfectly. I used a brown belt to hook in the sword, and I reused some brown pants I already owned along with costume shoes from their Jack Sparrow costume. To complete the look, I found a black wig that was just right. In the end, it all came together perfectly, capturing Inigo’s iconic style!

My best tip for putting together a family costume

One of my best tips for putting together a family costume is to DIY one costume and buy the rest. This approach not only saves time but also allows for a unique touch that can make your costume stand out. For example, when we dressed up for our Finding Nemo theme, I created a DIY Darla costume, while I purchased Nemo and turtle costumes online for the boys.

By focusing your creative energy on one character, you can really dive into the details and ensure it reflects your vision. Meanwhile, purchasing the other costumes from reliable sources saves you from the stress of trying to craft multiple outfits. Plus, it can help you balance your busy schedule while still achieving a cohesive family look. This way, you can enjoy the fun of DIY without feeling overwhelmed, creating lasting memories as you all dress up together!
