Media Room

We recently finished our basement and wanted to create a fun media room where everyone could hang out together. After my boyfriend moved in, we realized we needed a little more space for relaxing and spending time as a family. One of the things that actually brought us together in the beginning was gaming, so we thought it would be fun to design a space where we could play games and also have movie nights with the boys. I’m really excited to share how we put this cozy media room together.

Media Center

For our media center I built an IKEA media center for our basement using BESTA units, and it turned out to be such a great project. I love how customizable IKEA pieces are and how you can create a built-in look without the price of custom cabinetry. I was able to plan the layout, assemble everything myself, and design it around our gaming consoles, storage, and display space. If you want to see exactly how I put the IKEA media center together and the pieces I used, you can read the full blog post here.

Couch

The couch in our basement media room is one I’ve had since 2020 when I was living with my parents and we were using their big, spacious basement. It’s definitely a large couch, so fitting it into my house has taken a little creativity over the years, but I’ve always managed to make it work. The great thing about it is that it’s modular, so I can remove a section if I need to adjust the size.

At different times it’s been in our living room and now it’s found its place in the basement media room. It’s honestly one of the most comfortable couches ever everyone who sits on it always comments on how comfy it is, which makes it perfect for movie nights and hanging out. I have noticed that the price and color options have changed a bit since I bought mine. The color I have is called Heather Gray, and it’s been a great neutral for our space. Macy’s also runs sales pretty often, so if you’re interested in this couch it’s definitely worth keeping an eye out and purchasing during one of their promotions.

Ottomans

When I originally bought the couch, I didn’t get the matching ottoman. Now that it’s been a few years, it would be really hard to find one that matches exactly, and buying the official matching piece would also be pretty expensive.

Instead, I found these green ottomans and ended up getting two for the price of one, which made them a really great deal. We’ve actually loved having them in the space. They’re perfect for putting your feet up, and I really like the pop of color they add to the room. It ended up being a much more affordable option and worked out even better than trying to match the original couch.

Blankets

No cozy media room is complete without plenty of soft blankets. These are honestly my all-time favorite blankets, and I have one in almost every room of my house because I love them that much. They’re incredibly soft and perfect for movie nights when everyone wants to get comfortable on the couch. I’m a little obsessed with them! The best part is I have a code that will get you 50% off, which makes them an even better deal if you’re looking to add some extra coziness to your space.

TV

The TV in our media room is a 75-inch Samsung, and I did spend a little more on it because movies and gaming are important to me. I wanted something with really good picture quality so the colors look great and everything runs smoothly when we’re playing games. I do love the look of the Frame TVs, but for me it just wasn’t worth the extra money especially for a TV that’s in the basement and isn’t seen much during the day.

Next Painting

The next project I want to tackle in this room is painting it to give the space even more of a cozy media room vibe. I think darker walls would make movie nights feel even better and help the room feel more like a theater. The two colors I’m deciding between are Black Swan by Sherwin Williams and Cracked Pepper by Behr. I actually typed both colors into ChatGPT to see what the room might look like with each one, which was really fun to visualize. I’m still trying to decide which direction to go, but I’d love to hear what you think!
