Why I Wrote This Children’s Book About Grief

I wrote this children’s book about grief after searching for books to help my own boys when they started asking more questions about their dad. I found that many children’s grief books felt a little too complicated or hard for young kids to really understand. I wanted to create something simple and gentle something children could easily connect with and a small way they could feel close to the person they miss. As my boys got older, their curiosity about their dad grew. We started talking about the things he loved to do, and then we would go out and do those things together. I saw how much that helped them feel connected to him, and that idea became the heart behind this book.

How Books Can Help Children Process Grief

Books can be a gentle way to help children process grief because they give kids words and stories to help them understand big emotions. Many children don’t always know how to explain what they’re feeling, and reading about characters who miss someone they love can help them feel less alone. A story can also open the door for important conversations between parents and children that might otherwise feel hard to start. When families read together, it creates a safe space for kids to ask questions, share memories, and talk about the person they miss.

Who This Book Is For

I wrote We Miss Papa Bear with my own family in mind. The story was inspired by my twin boys and their dad. My late husband loved the outdoors, and as my boys got older and asked more questions about him, we started talking about the things he loved to do and going out and doing those things together. It became a simple way for them to feel close to him. While this book grew from our own experience, it is meant to help any child who has lost someone special in their life whether that’s a parent, grandparent, or another loved one.
